“The longer the blade, the more cumbersome it was in close quarter situations.” This was also true of the Roman gladius. Formations were kept tight, so there is little room for swinging. So the short blade made those close quarters easier to navigate, and focused combat on thrusting, with less parrying.

This is a hell of a little thing to leap on, bearing in mind all the things I could go for, but something that drives me slightly mad is this "-esque" thing. It's a Latin rip off of Germanic "-isc", which itself gives us English "-ish". It's almost as bad as "blanket". But yes, there's nothing wrong with an "-ish", or a "-like". There should be no shame in speaking one's mother tongue.

Can you talk about boarding pikes in one episode (or maybe you already did)? I never understood exactly what they were or why they seem like they were preferred by the royal navy for arming their men during sea engagements. Edit: Ah never mind I see it in the linked collab vids at the end lol.

More to the point ... I have never doubted that men with pole arms existed but what I want to know and dispute is the term Bill and bow unit .. Surely bills , pole arms were universally used by most non archer infantry including men at arms and foot knights all fighting together in support of each other . So are we saying this is correct and Bill units came later in the 16th century

That reminds me of the tip Albion Swords had on their Zorro-themed colichemarde, and I very much want to commission a sword with a similar blade to that Albion partially because of how striking that spear-tipped smallsword element is.

That is utterly fascinating to me for a slew of reasons. As far as the tip, Bill Bagwell's old book on designing, making, and using Bowie knives as dedicated fighters has a lot dedicated to the thrust. The tips on his knives aren't points but a small radius that is sharpened all the way around.

Pausing at 11:00 First thing that comes to mind is a demonstration of the skill of the maker. Something made as a show-piece first and foremost. On a similar note, a second reason could be for aesthetics or prestige or what-not. A bigger is better mentality. The third is maybe to fence with them more effectively? Like, there could be a fear that if you use the shaft to parry a sword or axe strike, it might damage the shaft, so you want a longer blade to be able to parry with the more durable metal part. That's all I can think of. Interested to see if I got any of them right

Possibly a naïve comment, but it seems to me that the tip is ideal for civilian self-defence. If I got attacked by a footpad, I would probably prefer not to skewer them - corpses mean paperwork. However, the ability to slice a hand or a cheek could be a real deterrent.

I was under the impression that one of the major uses of a thumb ring was to give more leverage not so much in the cut, but in the recovery, when pulling the blade back. Marginally faster parries and feints are after all just as useful as marginally stronger cuts, and thumb rings offer such an advantage where other grips (and devices facilitating them like finger rings) don't. One of the reasons I want a schiavona is because they often came with both finger and thumb rings, to truly maximize control while also offering some of the best hand protection out there. Also, that glove was really proving the lack of a ricasso on that sword, eh?
